If you are visiting my website because you have concerns about your weight or eating habits, you find yourself excessively worrying about your appearance, or you know someone who is demonstrating odd food behaviors, welcome.  I hope the information here will help you find resources for yourself or those you love.

Eating disorders are treatable.  Eating disorders may start with excessive concern about appearance, negatively comparing yourself to other people, and/or a strong desire for thinness.  Depression and anxiety often accompany eating disorders, and eating disorder behaviors may be used as a way to reduce anxiety or self soothe when your feeling depressed, lonely, sad or bored.  Sexual abuse is also found to sometimes be a precursor to eating disorders.

It can be difficult to recognize eating disorder behavior as abnormal,  and therefore many people do not seek counseling until the behaviors begin to feel out of control.  Treatment for an eating disorder usually includes working with an individual therapist to help address behavior change, and uncover underlying themes that trigger the behaviors.  Group therapy can be very effective in breaking the isolation that often goes along with eating disorders, and to help people develop a support system, and to feel they are not alone.  Family therapy can also be important to uncover family issues that may be contributing to eating disorder behaviors, and to give family members support and education.

In my San Jose private practice I offer individual, group and family therapy.  I also provide workshops designed to educate and support individuals and families about eating disorders. I work with individuals of all ages in a warm and friendly environment.  My approach is non-judgmental and strength-based.
